Bédier, 1067) — fin XIIe s. dans T.-L.; d'où ca 1130-60 bran « épée » (Couronnement Louis, 274 dans T.-L.); 1160 brand (WACE, Rou, III, 323, ibid.), qualifié de ,,vieux mot`` dep. 1690, FUR.; forme bran dans Ac. Compl. 1842; la forme brant, attestée jusqu'au XVIe s., Du Bartas dans GDF., est reprise par Lar. 19e. Étant donné que dans la Romania le mot semble originaire de l'aire gallo-romane, l'étymon a. b. frq. brand (GAM. Rom.2 t. 1, p. 281; EWFS1) est plus probable que l'étymon germ. brand (BRÜCH, p. 65, 99, 163, 174; BL.-W.5; FEW t. 15, 1, p. 242 b). Le frq., terme de la lang. milit., a pénétré au sens de « lame de l'épée » (d'où « épée »), dér. de celui de « tison, brandon » en raison du brillant, de l'éclat de la lame; ces 2 sens sont attestés dans les lang. germ. : a. nord. brandr « embrasement, bois de chauffage » et « lame de l'épée, glaive » (DE VRIES Anord.); a. h. all., m. h. all. brant « tison » et « épée étincelante » (LEXER); m. néerl. brant « feu, bûcher » et « arme étincelante, épée » (VERDAM); ags. brond « tison » et « lame d'épée, épée » (NED).
